Building a Better Breakfast

We've all heard it before, breakfast is sooooo important, possibly the most important meal of the day. It is the meal that replenishes our bodies after it has worked heartily through the night to repair itself AND the meal that sets the tone for the day ahead.

But knowing how important it is not the same thing as doing something based on that knowledge. Whether it's a time constraint or just not being "a breakfast person," for many of us breakfast just doesn't always happen. And when it does, much of the time it doesn't include what our bodies really need or what our tastebuds really want.

Whether your goal is to improve your skin, manage your PCOS symptoms, or just eat a meal that truly nourishes your mind and body while delighting your senses, it all starts with balance. Balancing your blood sugar that is. And how exactly do you do that? By combining fiber, fat, protein, and carbs.

Fortunately, building a tasty and nourishing meal need not be time consuming or complicated. With a little prep the night before or using cooking techniques that allow you to whip up a meal while you shower, you can get it done.

Here are a few of my faves that will help you start your day off with the energy you need to get going and stay going.

Coconut Oil: Double Duty Health and Beauty

Ah, it's time to breathe easy and live light. Summer is right around the corner and my mind is filling with thoughts of sun, sand, and leisure. The smell of seaweed and coconut oil overtake me as I daydream about lazy days on the beach.

Living in NYC, my days are more likely to include picnic blankets, grass, and crowded parks than sunny beaches. Trips to surf and sand come a lot less often. Fortunately, enjoying the smell or the beauty and health benefits of the coconut oil, the oil synonymous with summer, doesn't have to wait until the next excursion to the ocean.

The Dietitian Dishes: I Don't Count Calories

I confess! I have absolutely no clue EXACTLY how many more calories a quarter cup of almonds provides compared to a quarter cup of pistachios. Daily, people ask me how many calories are in a food and I typically have to answer, "I don't know, I'll have to look it up." They then usually look at me with an expression of shock and dismay. Oh, the scandal!

It's expected that as a dietitian-nutritionist I have a database of calorie counts for every food under the sun in my mind. It's also assumed I count calories myself to guide my dietary choices and teach others to do the same. But honestly, none of these three are true.

Do I think calorie counting has value? Absolutely! Do I stress it when I meet with patients? Rarely. Why not? Because low calorie does not necessarily equal healthful or beneficial. From what I have seen, focusing on calories breeds (or maybe it is the result of) a mindset of deprivation and punishment.

Spring Has Sprung! In Season Fruit and Vegetables!

Hip hip hooray! Finally, spring is here and with it a plethora of fresh fruits and vegetables. I, for one, could not be more excited! After a long dreary winter and a limited assortment of available fruits and veggies (anyone else tired of apples and root vegetables?), the prospect of flowers, sunshine, melon, and spinach are almost too wonderful to fathom.

I can't wait to get my hands on some spring produce; I am especially looking forward to heading down to my favorite green market and seeing what the local farmers have to offer.

Turmeric: Double Duty, Health and Beauty

Turmeric, the golden spice responsible for the yellow hue of mustard and curry, is as good for you on the outside as it is for you on the inside.

You can reap the benefits of turmeric by eating or drinking it in tea, condiments, meals, and smoothies. You can also put it directly on your skin. A turmeric mask can be a fun and effective addition to your Self Care Sunday (or any day) routine.
