Book Review: Expect the Best by Elizabeth M. Ward MS, RD

I'm back with my second book review! It's been far too long since I've done one of these. Expect many more in the future!

The summer of my first year of grad school I took a lifecycle nutrition course. It was during that course that I came face to face with dietitians, nutritionists, and breastfeeding experts who had dedicated their lives to serving women during and after pregnancy. It was during that course that I bought my very first pregnancy nutrition book.

That book was the first edition of Expect the Best. And I loved it! So I was beyond excited when I found out a new edition was in the works. I was even more excited when the author, Elizabeth Ward, reached out to me and offered me a free copy. Being a fan of the previous edition, (and an equally big fan of Elizabeth and her work) I enthusiastically accepted her generous offer.

I knew the book was a winner when my mom picked it up, flipped to the recipes and, started making little "mmm" noises. My mom is a picky eater and definitely not pregnant, so if the recipes appealed to her, they're definitely good.

From cover to cover, Elizabeth shares great advice about what to eat before, during, and after pregnancy. The highlight of the book for me was The Words of Motherly Wisdom sprinkled throughout the book where real life mamas share insider tips to manage some pesky pregnancy problems or just offer an encouraging word.

You'll find information on food safety, meeting your nutrient needs, eating for twin pregnancies, preconception nutrition, and recipes.

Having quite a sweet tooth I decided to try The Black Bean Brownie Bites. They were delicious! I'm a huge bean fan and grew up eating bean pies, so the idea of a bean based dessert was right up my alley. They were quick and easy to make. Thank God! 'Cause when you're craving chocolate, time is of the essence.

I can't recommend this book enough.
